Then, one night at a neighborhood party, a woman we know sniffed that she keeps her kids away from ''electronic baby sitters'' like TV and computers. Those were the good old days, when we were blissfully unaware that there might be a dark side to such CD's. In other words, my wife and I were sold on kiddieware.
KEYWACK MACINTOSH SOFTWARE
(At 22 months, his sister is experiencing her own first KeyWack moments.) It's not as though my wife and I sit around saying, ''We'd better get them some educational software if we want our kids to get into one of the top kindergartens'' our son uses his dusty, first-generation iMac only when he wants to, which amounts to a 20-minute session once a week. Now, at 3 1/2, our son is a CD's-for-toddlers veteran. By the time he was a year old, he was playing KeyWack for, oh, three or four minutes at a stretch. I doubt that it qualifies as educational software, and I'm sure it did nothing for the longevity of my laptop. It's sheer heaven for babies each time they bang the keyboard, KeyWack makes a funny sound and a colorful shape on the screen. The next week, I downloaded a shareware program called KeyWack.
(As I recall, my manuscript was slightly improved as a result.) He reached out and mashed the keyboard with his chubby little fists, inserting random characters into my document. As I jiggled him on my lap while balancing my laptop on my knees, he, like millions before him, succumbed to the ineffable lure of Microsoft Word. He was 7 months old, and we were flying to visit my parents for Thanksgiving. MY son's first computer experience took place in an airport waiting lounge.
